What can we help you with?

  • Small group classes take place between September and May. Classes are scheduled in 4-8 week sessions that include one 30 minute lesson each week for kids ages 3-12. Swimmers are enrolled in the appropriate class based on their ability. Small group classes are not scheduled in June, July or August.  If you are interested in lessons during the summer months please consider our private/household options.

If you are unsure about your swimmers ability for proper group class placement please contact us to schedule a swim assessment. We will get in the water with your swimmer and assess their current swim skills to determine the most effective option for continued progress in the water.

  • Parent + Child: Designed for the youngest swimmers (typically 6 months to 3 years), these lessons build water confidence through play-based activities with a parent in the water. Focus is on comfort, basic safety skills, floating, and gentle breath control while creating a positive, bonding experience with the water.

Pre-School (ages 3–5): This level emphasizes fun, relaxation, and water exploration. Key skills include breath control, cross-body coordination (performing two actions at once), and learning to move comfortably in the water. The goal is for children to feel safe, relaxed, and joyful in the pool.

Learn to Swim (ages 4–8): This level teaches children to swim “easy” and independently. Students learn foundational skills like floating, gliding, basic kicking, and rhythmic breathing so they can swim short distances with control and confidence. The emphasis is on relaxed, efficient movement and truly enjoying the water rather than struggling.

Stroke Development (ages 5-8) Building on independent swimming, this level introduces proper form for freestyle and breaststroke. Students refine their “easy” swimming technique by adding coordinated arm strokes, better body position, and rhythmic breathing. The focus remains on smooth, relaxed control of the water instead of power or speed.

Advanced Stroke (ages 7-11): For swimmers who have mastered the basics, this level refines freestyle and breaststroke with precise technique, improved power, timing, and efficiency. Students learn to swim faster while staying relaxed, with strong emphasis on rhythm, breathing control, and effortless propulsion through the water.

All of our lessons prioritize "breathing first" and teaching children to control their movement through the water with relaxed breathing and natural rhythm, helping them swim “easy” and confidently rather than making it feel difficult.

  • Private lessons are scheduled year round for ages 2+. Private lessons are ideal for those looking for a 1:1 experience. This could range from a child whose skills may be behind their age cohort or an adult looking to develop skills for lifelong swimming. Private lessons are 30 minutes and are scheduled by lesson, based on swimmer and instructor availability.

To inquire or schedule private lessons please email rachel@northerndoorrec.com

  • Household Swimming Lessons are scheduled year round for ages 2+. These lessons offer a flexible, semi-private swim instruction option that combines the personalized attention of a private lesson with the social benefits of a small group class.

Families can book a dedicated lesson time for up to 3 children. This can include siblings from the same household or a small mix of children from different families. Like a private lesson, you choose the day and time that works best for your schedule, and the instructor tailors the session to the group’s ages, skill levels, and goals.
